Blue light at night could cause depression-like symptoms: Study

Blue-coloured night lamps have the worst effect on one's moods while exposure to red light at night has significantly less evidence of depressive symptoms, says a new study.


New research has shown how colours of night lamps could influence moods. In a study done on hamsters, researchers found that blue light had the worst effects on mood-related measures, followed closely by white.


Hamsters exposed to red light at night had significantly less evidence of depressive symptoms and changes in the brain linked to depression, compared to those that experienced blue or white light.


The only hamsters that fared better than those exposed to red light were those that had total darkness at night, reports Science Daily.


The findings may have important implications for humans, particularly those whose work on night shifts makes them susceptible to mood disorders, said Randy Nelson, co-author of the study and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the Ohio State University.


"Our findings suggest that if we could use red light when appropriate for night-shift workers, it may not have some of the negative effects on their health that white light does," Nelson said.


The study appears in the Aug 7, 2013 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience.

Hot Chocolate Can Keep Brain Healthy

US study has suggested drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day may help elderly people to keep their brains healthy.


The study, published online in the American Academy of Neurology journal Neurology, involved 60 people with an average age of 73 who did not have dementia.


The participants drank two cups of hot cocoa per day for a month and did not consume any other chocolate during that time. These people were also given tests of memory and thinking skills as well as ultrasounds tests to measure the amount of blood flow to the brain.


"We're learning more about blood flow in the brain and its effect on thinking skills," said study author Farzaneh Sorond of the Harvard Medical School in Boston. "As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow."


"This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer's," Sorond added.


The researchers found that 18 of the 60 participants, having impaired blood flow at the start of the study, saw an 8.3-percent improvement by the end of the study. There was no improvement for those who started out with regular blood flow.


The people with impaired blood flow also improved their times on a test of working memory, with scores dropping from 167 seconds at the beginning of the study to 116 seconds at the end, the researchers said. There was no change in times for people with regular blood flow.


However, Paul Rosenberg, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study, said: "More work is needed to prove a link between cocoa, blood flow problems and cognitive decline."


"But this is an important first step that could guide future studies." Rosenberg added.

Home Remedies for Kidney Stones

How to Take Care of Your SKIN ?



1. Care for Dry skin:
a. For dry skin, use a creamy cleanser to melt away dirt. Leave it on your skin before sweeping it away with cotton wool. Splash cold water onto your face to clean and refresh your skin.
b. Use a thick cream moisturizer to seal in as much moisture as possible and have a refreshing feel.

2. Care for Oily skin:
a. To care for oily skin you should start with a gentle, foaming facial wash. This will remove dirt and oil without stripping away moisture. Soak cotton wool in a gentle astringent lotion and sweep it over your skin to refresh and cool it.
b. Even oily skin needs a moisturizer, but choose a light, watery fluid; this will be enough for your skin. Allow the moisturizer to sink in well and then absorb the excess with a tissue to prevent shine.

You can choose diet syrups and diet jams.

11. Limit hard liquor, beer, wine and liqueurs

They all have unwanted calories.

If you do choose to drink, have a light beer instead of a regular beer, and dry wine instead of sweet wine or liqueurs. Use a diet soft drink as a mix.

12.Choose “diet foods” Carefully

Some diet foods are poor choices such as diet chocolate bars or diet candies that can have a lot of fat or sugar.

Good choices are low-fat, calorie-reduced, or sugar-free foods such as diet soft drinks, diet jello,  sugar-free gum.
